Session 7: Why?

Mino giizhigad!

Last sesson...Let's chat about the why!

Why did they create these treaties? Was it a good or bad thing? Some could say good and some could say bad. Depends on who you ask, and what their view is on it. Treaties were made so American Indians could have their land and so that the United States could keep some kind of control on it. Treaties led to a lot of bad things. They led to fights between the US and American Indians, but in the beginning, they led to a lot of peace between the two. Over time, the United States has tried to take more control of the land that does not properly belong to them. This has led to many tribes getting their land stripped from them. When they don’t have land, they basically don’t have a tribe. Thus causing many tribes to lose their identity along with their members.

I hope this course gave you the insight you needed when it comes to American Indians and treaties. It's important that we all are able to relate and understand other's cultures.

Session 6: When?

Mino giizhigad!

When did the treaties start playing affect? Why? Treaties originated in 1774, and it was used between American Indian Nations and the US to establish borders and prescribe conditions of behavior between the parties. Treaties have evolved tremendously over time. The places where the treaties were set into effect was all over the United States on American Indian land, and continues to be the same to this day.

All for today!

Session 5: Where?

Hello!

Where did this originate? Where does this place into effect? This one required some research. I found a great article from a site called Indian Country Today. Here’s a little bit from it, “The first treaty was signed on September 17, 1778 at Fort Pitt, present day Pittsburgh, between the Delaware Nation and the United States of America, which was the name of the Confederacy of States before the adoption of the U.S. Constitution”. So treaties have been around for a while, only a year later than when The Articles of Confederation were born.
